Born: 1818, UK, England, London   Died: 1910, Bramdean, Hants.

Painter and printmaker. The son of a paediatrician he first studied medicine and qualified as a doctor from the Sorbonne, Paris, in 1838. He travelled to Italy and Switzerland in 1844, the year of his first recorded etchings. He married Deborah, a half-sister of Whistler, working alongside the latter on an incomplete series of etchings of the Thames during the late 1850s. He studied Old Master prints and became a collector of Whistler's and Rembrandt's etchings. His passion for printmaking resulted in him being a founder member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1880. He produced etchings, drypoints and watercolours of landscapes, particularly river scenes
