Painter and printmaker. The son of a paediatrician he first studied medicine and qualified as a doctor from the Sorbonne, Paris, in 1838. He travelled to Italy and Switzerland in 1844, the year of his first recorded etchings. He married Deborah, a half-sister of Whistler, working alongside the latter on an incomplete series of etchings of the Thames during the late 1850s. He studied Old Master prints and became a collector of Whistler's and Rembrandt's etchings.
