Blair Rowlands Hughes-Stanton

Born: 1902, UK, England, London   Died: 1981

Printmaker and illustrator. Son of the artist Sir Robert Hughes-Stanton and husband to Gertrude Hermes (1901-1983). Studied at Byam Shaw School of Art, 1919-22, and the Royal Academy Schools, 1922-23, before attending the Brook Green School of Art run by Leon Underwood (1890-1975), 1923-25. Travelled to France, Italy, Iceland and Yugoslavia during the early 1920s. He worked as a book designer and illustrator for the Gregynog Press, 1929-32, before founding his own Gemini Press, 1933-36. He taught at Westminster, 1934-39, Colchester, 1945-47, and St Martin's, 1947-48, Schools of Art and at the Central School of Art and Design, 1948-c.1977. He produced paintings, wood engravings and linocuts of landscapes and figures, often in a fantastical style, many of which were published in private press books
