Sir William Nicholson

Born: 1872, UK, England, Newark-on-Trent   Died: 1949, Blewbury, Berkshire

Painter, printmaker and illustator. Father of the painter Ben Nicholson (1894-1982). Studied at Hubert Herkomer's (1849-1914) school in Hertfordshire, 1888-89, and in Paris at the Académie Julian, 1889-90. In 1893 he secretly married and moved to Denham, Buckinghamshire, where he worked on poster designs with his brother-in-law James Pryde (1872-1949) under the pseudonym 'J. & W. Beggerstaff', 1893-95. He then produced illustration work for the publisher William Heinemann, 1896-1900. In 1917 he established a studio in London where he painted portraits, still lifes and landscapes. His other work includes stage set designs for the first production of 'Peter Pan' (1904) and illustrations for Sassoon's 'Memoirs of a Fox Hunting Man' (1929)
