Printmaker. Son of an engraver for whom he served a seven year apprenticeship. He also studied at Bristol Municipal School of Art and under Frank Short (1857-1945) at the Royal College of Art. He taught engraving at Chelsea School of Art, until 1926, and printmaking at Goldsmiths' College, from 1924, where his students included Paul Drury (1903-1987), Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) and Edward Bouverie Hoyton (1900-1988). He was a member of the Engraving Faculty at the British School at Rome, 1930-52. He produced detailed etchings and line engravings of people and street scenes including a series of studies of rural craftsmen
