Joe Tilson

Born: 1928, UK, England, London

Painter, sculptor and printmaker. Having originally worked as a carpenter, 1944-46, Tilson served in the RAF before studying at St. Martin’s School of Art, 1949-52 and the Royal College of Art, 1952-55. He won the Rome Prize and lived and worked in Italy 1955-57. After returning to London, he worked for St. Martin’s School of Art, Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, Kings College, Newcastle Upon Tyne, The Visual School of Art, New York, and the Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Hamburg, between 1958 and 1963. His works include paintings, prints and sculptures. He is seen as one of the fathers of British Pop Art and was acquainted with artists such as Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005) and Richard Hamilton (1922-2011); he exhibited with Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) at the XXII Biennale in Venice in the British pavilion. Series such as PAGES deal with political issues and, since the 1970s his works have also been influenced by authors such as James Joyce, Ezra Pound and William Butler Yeats. Neoplatonism has been a topic in his series ALCHERA. He was elected member of the Royal Academy in 1991. He currently lives and works in London and Cortona, Tuscany.
