Painter, printmaker and architect. Son of a psychiatric doctor. After a schooling at Harrow he worked as an office clerk for the Public Health Department of London County Council, 1927-37. He also attended Archibald Standish Hartrick's (1864-1950) evening classes at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, until 1930, and was soon elected a member of both the London Artists' Association, 1932, and of the London Group, 1934. In 1937 he co-founded the Euston Road Art School with William Coldstream (1908-1987) and Claude Rogers (1907-1979). Having confronted Modernism earlier in his career, he turned completely to abstraction in 1948. He taught at Newcastle University, 1954-61, and between 1954 and 1977 he designed a section of the new town Peterlee in County Durham. He produced geometric abstract paintings, prints and reliefs
