Michael Rothenstein

Born: 1908, UK, England, London   Died: 1993

Printmaker, painter and writer. Son of the artist Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945). Studied at Chelsea Polytechnic and at the Central School of Art and Design, 1924-27, after which he succumbed to a long illness which lasted through the 1930s. In 1939 he partook in the Recording Britain project and in 1940 he moved to Essex settling at Great Bardfield the following year. After the war he started to turn to printmaking and worked at Stanley Hayter's Paris studio, 'Atelier 17', c.1952, and in 1954 established his own print workshop in Great Bardfield. He later taught at Camberwell School of Art and was made an Art Fellow at Sheffield University in 1962. He wrote 'Looking at Paintings', 1947, 'Linocuts and Woodcuts', 1962, and 'Frontiers of Printmaking', 1966
