Kumi Sugaï

Born: 1919, Kobe, Japan   Died: 1996, Kobe, Japan

Printmaker. Studied at Osaka School of Fine Arts and, after dropping out, began working in advertising during WWII. Moved to Paris in 1952 and attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere. Shortly afterwards, in 1953, he exhibited his work for the first time at the Salon d’Automne. From then on he held numerous well-received solo exhibitions. He was influenced by contemporary western painting styles such as abstract impressionism, minimalism and Pop, and he was fascinated by calligraphy and typography. His work featured a bold, graphic aesthetic with simplistic colours using ukiyo-e woodblock techniques and, later, silk-screen printing and lithography.
