Display artist/maker:

Joel Stein

Born: 1926, France, Boulogne, Saintmartin   Died: 2012, France

Painter, graphic designer and installation artist. Stein began his studies at the École des Beaux Arts, Paris, in 1946 and also trained at the studio of Ferdinand Léger (1881-1955) from 1949. He was influenced by the Surrealists and the ‘Lettriste’-group and co-founded GRAV, together with e. g. Jean-Pierre Vasarely (1934-2002) and Julio de Parc (born 1928), in 1960 and the Center der Recherche d’Art Visuel. His aim was to make art more accessible to the general public and encourage them to become more active participants rather than passive observers. He created paintings, prints and kinetic installations based on mathematics, geometry and the idea of the labyrinth. He worked with light, mirrors and laser techniques and was a representative of the Op-Art. Stein exhibited internationally across Europe, including the documenta III in Kassel, Germany, in 1964.
