Anders Zorn

Born: 1860, Sweden, Dalecarlia, Mora, Utmeland   Died: 1920, Mora

Painter and printmaker. Born to a family of farmers, Zorn never met his father (who never married and died in 1872) but was allowed to keep his name. He showed artistic ability from a young age, initially finding passion for woodcarving. He soon turned to painting and went to study at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, Stockholm, when he was just 15. His watercolour painting ‘In Mourning’ was exhibited at a student exhibition in 1880, and gained him much recognition, especially since watercolour was a very uncommon media at the time. He was an international success as one of the most acclaimed portrait painters of his era. His famous sitters included three Presidents of the United States, one of whom was Grover Cleveland in 1899. His reputation also earned him acclaim in the wider European art world, and he was awarded the French Legion of Honour in 1889 and asked to paint a self-portrait for the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Zorn was also a talented etcher; he worked on the technique from 1882 and accumulated over 250 etchings, including portraits of Ernest Renan, August Rodin and August Strindberg. His work can be seen at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Stockholm and is also housed in the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
