Born: 1913, UK, Scotland, Greenock   Died: 1989, Coleford, Bath

Painter and printmaker. Son of a signwriter. Spent his youth in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland. Studied at Belfast College of Art, 1928-31, and the Royal Academy, 1931-35. He travelled to Italy, 1937, and lived at Pont-Aven and St Tropez, 1937-39, before returning to London and Somerset. He served in the cartography section of the Royal Engineers during the Second World War, 1942-46, but also taught at Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, 1941-56. He travelled to America in 1953 - a time when his work was completely abstract - where he met Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. He won the John Moores prize in 1959 and between 1963 and 1965 he undertook a residency at the Ford Foundation in Berlin. He produced paintings and lithographs of monochrome still lifes, often featuring saucepans reduced to abstract shapes
