Display artist/maker:

Pablo Ruiz Picasso

Born: 1881, Spain, Malaga   Died: 1973, France, Mougins

Painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and stage designer. Son of José Ruiz y Blasco (1838-1913), painter and art teacher. Aged only 14 he was admitted to the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, but skipped class and did not complete his studies; at 16, he moved to Madrid to study at the Royal Academy of San Fernando but became frustrated and began to skip classes again, favouring observational walks around the city. Upon returning to Barcelona, Picasso became inspired by the anarchists and radicals he encountered there and began to experiment with his work. Picasso's work is characterised by a series of "periods": blue period; rose period; cubism (which he pioneered); classical period, and surrealism. He continued to work tirelessly well into his later years, believing that work would keep him alive. He died on April 8, 1973 in Mougins, France, having worked for nearly 80 of his 91 years.
