Sir Sidney Nolan

Born: 1917, Australia, Melbourne   Died: 1992, London

Painter, printmaker and sculptor. Studied in Melbourne, 1934-36, whilst also working as a commercial artist. He served in the Second World War, but during this time managed to paint landscapes at his base at Wimmera. In 1950 he settled in England living in Cambridge, London and finally, from 1983, near Prestigne on the Welsh border. He travelled to places such as Antarctica, Africa, China and New Guinea. He painted expressive works, often in series, of landscapes, self portraits and themes such as Ned Kelly and Leda and the Swan. He also worked on stage designs, book illustrations and bronze sculptures
