Henry Spencer Moore

Born: 1898, UK, England, Yorkshire, Castleford   Died: 1986, Much Hadham

Sculptor and printmaker. Son of a coal miner. Served in France in the First World War before studying at Leeds School of Art, 1919-21, and at the Royal College of Art, 1921-24. He taught at the latter, 1924-31, and at Chelsea School of Art, 1932-39. He was appointed a Trustee of both the Tate Gallery, 1941-56, and of the National Gallery, 1955-74. He won the sculpture prize at the 1948 Venice Biennale and received numerous international awards and honorary degrees. He produced stone carvings and bronzes of rounded, semi-abstract figures inspired by his studies of African, Pacific and Pre-Columbian sculpture
