Display artist/maker:

Fernand Léger

Born: 1881, France, Normandy, Argentan   Died: 1955, Gif-Sur-Yvette

Painter and designer. Served an apprenticeship with an architect in Caen, 1897-99, before moving to Paris in 1900 where he practised as an architectural draughtsman and attended classes at both the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian. He served in the army in the First World War, 1914-17, an experience which resulted in his paintings adopting cylindrical, machine-like forms. In 1924 he and Amedée Ozenfant (1886-1966) founded their own art school the Académie de l'Art Contemporain. He first visited America in 1931 where he enjoyed commercial success and later taught at both Yale University and Mills College, California, during the Second World War. He produced murals and designed for the theatre but is best known for the tubular forms of his Purist paintings of machines, acrobats and cyclists
