Emile Othon Friesz

Born: 1879, France, Le Havre   Died: 1949, Paris

Painter and designer. Studied alongside Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) at the École des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre, 1896-99, and then later in Paris, 1899-1904. He painted with Georges Braque (1882-1963) in Antwerp and Provence, 1906-07, before travelling to Munich, 1909, and Portugal, 1911. He then served in the First World War after which he visited America where he was awarded the Carnegie Medal in 1925. He taught from 1929 at the Académie Scandinave in Paris and later at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiére, 1941-44. Between 1937 and 1940 he worked in collaboration with his friend Raoul Dufy on a large mural for the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. He produced Impressionist and Fauvist work before adopting a loose Cezanne-like style. His later years were spent painting scenes around Honfleur in Normandy
