Born: 1931, UK, England, Manchester   Died: 2009, Cornwall

Painter and art historian. Studied at Manchester College of Art, 1949-53, and at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1953-56. After graduating he received travel scholarships enabling him to explore Italy and France for two years. He then worked as Assistant Director of the Welsh Arts Council between 1959 and 1963 before teaching at Reading University, 1963-76, and as Principal of Falmouth School of Art, 1976-87. He is the author of two books on Cornish art colonies, 'Shining Sands, Artists in Newlyn and St. Ives 1880-1930' and 'Painting the Warmth of the Sun, St Ives Artists 1939-1975' both published in 1995. After retirement from teaching he remained in Cornwall where he continued to paint abstract landscapes inspired by the Helston Estuary
