Jack Crabtree

Born: 1938, UK, England, Lancashire, Rochdale

Painter and printmaker. Studied at Rochdale College of Art, 1955-57, St Martin's College of Art, 1957-59, and the Royal Academy, 1959-61. Taught in schools in Salford and Rochdale, 1961-66, before being appointed lecturer at Newport College of Art, 1966-74. He later taught as Professor of Fine Art at the University of Ulster, Belfast, 1983-86. He painted murals on the theme of Owain Glyndwr for the Council Chambers at Plas Machynlleth in 1971 and in 1975 he undertook a Gregynog Fellowship. His early, realist paintings explored life in mining communities - work which led to a 1974 commission from the National Coalboard for a pictorial record of the changing face of the South Wales coalfields. He has also been a member of the 56 Group Wales
