Jack Coutu

Born: 1924, UK, England, Surrey, Farnham   Died: 2017

Painter, sculptor and printmaker. Also known as Raymond John Coutu. He initially studied at Farnham School of Art before specialising in stained glass at the Royal College of Art and then printmaking at the Central School of Art, 1951-54, where his work was influenced by the modernist prints of Merlin Evans. He later taught printmaking at Central, 1957-65, and at the West Surrey College of Art and Design (Farnham), 1965-85. He became a member of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and was an active member of the Printmakers' Council. Over the years he produced a variety of work including abstract etchings and engravings, pastoral scenes incorporating birds and animals and, after 1968, become a skilled carver of netsuke
