Kenneth George Chapman

Born: 1908, UK, London, East Ham   Died: 1993, Aberaeron

Painter, printmaker and commercial artist. Studied at Gravesend School of Art, 1924, after which he became a successful graphic designer, a career he gave up to study painting at both the Slade and the Royal College of Art in 1937. He lived in Essex, where he worked with Micheal Rothenstein (1908-1993), but found his subject matter in the mining communities of the South Wales valleys which he visited from 1953 onwards. He and his wife, Kate Chapman, eventually settled at Aberaeron in Cardiganshire in 1964. He won the Gold Medal at the 1957 National Eisteddfod. He produced dark townscapes which moodily describe Welsh working class life in the 1950s and 60s
