Joseph Webb

Born: 1908, UK, England, London, Ealing   Died: 1962

Printmaker and painter. Studied at Ealing School of Art, 1920-c.22, Chiswick School of Art, 1922-25, and the Hospitalfield College of Art, Arbroath, 1925-28, before returning to Chiswick where he taught as the Etching Master between 1930 and 1938. He registered as a Conscientious Objector during the Second World War after which he taught part-time at Hammersmith School of Art, 1945-48. In 1949 he visited South Africa, stopped etching and produced poster designs for Shell Mex. He showed work at his home in Harrow (known as the Bent-Tree Studio) and had one-man exhibitions at Colnaghi's, London, (1933), and Ryman's, Oxford, (1934). He was greatly influenced by the etcher Frederick Landseer Griggs (1876-1938). Inspired by the teachings of the Theosophical Society, he produced etchings and paintings of fantastical landscapes, cathedrals and medieval barns
