Sir Henry George Rushbury

Born: 1889, UK, England, Birmingham, Harborne   Died: 1968

Printmaker and painter. Studied silversmithing, stained glass and mural painting at Birmingham School of Art, 1903-09, after which he worked as an assistant to the painter Henry Arthur Payne (1868-1940), 1910-12. He moved to London in 1912 where he met Muirhead Bone (1876-1953) and Francis Dodd (1874-1949) who encouraged Rushbury to take up printmaking, particularly drypoint. He later studied briefly at the Slade School of Fine Art, 1921. He worked as an Official War Artist in both the First World War, 1914-18, and the Second World War, 1940-45. He was Keeper of the Royal Academy, 1949-64, and served as Vice President of the Royal Watercolour Society. His etchings and drypoints were typically detailed topographical landscapes, townscapes and architectural subjects including many scenes from his European travels
