Noel Rooke

Born: 1881, UK, England, London   Died: 1953

Printmaker, painter and designer. Son of the artist Thomas Mathews Rooke (1842-1942) and, from 1932, husband to Celia Mary Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes (1902-1998). Studied at the Slade School, c.1897, and at the Central School of Art and Design, 1898, teaching at the latter from 1905. At Central he was an influential teacher of wood engraving with students including Margaret Pilkington (1891-1974), John Farleigh (1900-1965), Robert Gibbings (1889-1958) and Clare Leighton (1901-1989). In 1914 he was appointed Head of the School of Book Production. He was a founder member of the Society of Wood Engravers, 1920, and an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. Some of his wood engravings were shown at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924
