Display artist/maker:

Frederick Charles Richards

Born: 1878, UK, Wales, Newport   Died: 1932, London

Painter and etcher. Son of a butcher. Studied at Newport School of Art, c.1900, before teaching in St Ives and at Bruges School of Art. He then later attended the Royal College of Art, 1909-12, where he studied etching under Sir Frank Short. After graduation his work was noticed by the publishers A. & C. Black from whom he won a commission for a series of illustrated sketchbooks. He made numerous drawings on his travels in Italy, North Africa and the Middle East, many of which were later developed into etchings. In 1930 he visited Persia and on his return wrote and illustrated 'A Persian Journey', however, due to illness he only manged to etch around a quarter of the 20-30 plates commissioned. He passionately promoted, and lectured upon, the relevance of art education. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers in 1921
