Charles Murray

Born: 1894, Aberdeen   Died: 1954

Born in 1894, in Aberdeen, Murray studied at the Glasgow School of Art for three years. He was a painter and etcher. He served with the Russian ‘White Army’ from 1918-20, fighting against the revolutionary force, the Bolsheviks. In Glasgow, on his return, he won the Prix de Rome for etching and thus studied at the British School in Rome from 1922-25. He then travelled in Europe. Came back to Glasgow in 1926 to teach engraving at the School of Art, and later lived in Leeds and Middlesex. He lived in poverty for much of his life, inspiring his pictures drawn from everyday rural life. Also, inspiration came from his travels in Iceland and Russia. His style was called Mannerism. He died in 1954.
