Frederick Landseer Maur Griggs

Born: 1876, UK, England, Hitchin   Died: 1938, Campden, Glos.

Printmaker and illustrator. Son of a baker. He trained as an architect and became an active member of the Council of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. He lived at Chipping Campden where he was also a member of the Guild of Handicrafts. He produced visionary etchings of medieval architecture which combined his interests in Arthurian legend and Roman Catholicism. An exponent of the work of Samuel Palmer, he became a mentor to Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) and Paul Drury (1903-1987). As an illustrator he is best known for his work on Macmillan's 'Highways and Byways' guide books. He also designed memorial crosses for Cotswold villages
