John Minton

Born: 1917, UK, England, Cambridgeshire, Great Shelford   Died: 1957, UK, England, London

Full name Francis John Minton.
Minton was born in 1917. He was an English painter, illustrator, stage designer and teacher. In 1938-1939 he studied in France, influenced by the brooding sadness of Berman’s work. He then became a teacher in London. From 1946-1952 he lived with Keith Vaughan. Here he consistently produced a large body of work. He built up a reputation as a book illustrator. Some of his landscapes, portraits and figure compositions were on an unusually large scale. In the mid-1950s, Minton was not sympathetic to the abstract trend that was becoming fashionable and felt increasingly side-lined. He suffered psychological problems, self-medicated with alcohol, and in 1957 he died by suicide.
