Born: 1888, Japan, Tokyo   Died: 1953

Printmaker. Also known as 'Mokuchu'. Learned traditional Japanese woodcut printmaking in Tokyo, a technique he brought to Europe where he lived in England and France between 1908 and 1934. He was an important influence on the development of the colour woodcut in English art schools during the 1920s. He was a member of the Society of Graver Printers in Colour with whom he exhibited 40 prints between 1922 and 1938. After the Second World War he worked and exhibited mainly in America. He typically produced colour woodcuts of flowers in vases and moonlit landscapes, the former often involving a complex array of colour blocks. He also produced woodcuts of paintings by artists such as Frank Brangwyn, George Clausen, John Sell Cotman and James McBey
