van Loo Charles-André

Born: 1705, France, Nice   Died: 1765, France, Paris

Charles-André van Loo was a French Rococo painter famous for his elegant portraits of European royalty and aristocracy in the mid-18th century. He was a son of the painter Louis-Abraham van Loo, a younger brother of Jean-Baptiste van Loo and Jacob van Loo's grandson. Loo followed his brother, Jean-Baptiste, to Rome in 1712 where he came under the teachings of Benedetto Luti and the sculptor Pierre Le Gros. He left Italy in 1723 and went to Paris to study at the Académie Royale. In 1735 he became a member of Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, and in 1762 he was decorated with the Order of Saint Michael and became First Painter to King Louis XV of France. He specialised in religious scenes, history painting, mythology, portraiture, allegory, and genre scenes.
