Jean Jacques François le Barbier

Born: 1738, France, Rouen   Died: 1826, France, Paris

Painter. draughtsman and writer on art. Sometimes called Le Barbier l’aîné ("the Elder")He won two first prizes at the École des Beaux-Arts of Rouen as a teenager and moved to Paris to study at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. During the 1760s, he travelled extensively in Italy and worked in Switzerland in 1776. He was elected member of the Royal Academy in 1780 and became an Academician in 1785. He was an official painter for the King of France and regularly exhibited at the Salon between 1781 and 1814. His most famous work is an illustrated version of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen which he created in 1789. He was the father of the artist Élise Bruyère (1776–1847).
