David Wilkie , Sir

Born: 1785, UK, Scotland, Fife, Cults   Died: 1841

Painter. Wilkie studied first at Trustees' Academy, Edinburgh, under painter John Graham and from 1806 at the Royal Academy, London. He exhibited at the RA and specialised in genre paintings, such as The Blind Fiddler (1806) and Chelsea Pensioners reading the Waterloo Dispatch (1816), commissioned by the Duke of Wellington, and historical scenes and portraits. He was elected associate member at the RA in 1809 and became a full academician in 1811. In 1831, he was appointed as painter in ordinary to William IV, and after the king's death to Queen Victoria. The knighthood was bestowed on him in 1826. His work was influenced by his travels within Europe, e.g. Italy, France and Germany and further afield, e.g. Israel and Egypt. In addition to his success as a painter, he was also an accomplished etcher.
