Born: 1770, Italy, Rome    Died: 1837, France, Paris

Neoclassical painter who studied with sculptor Augustin Pajou and painters Nicolas-Guy Brenet and Jacques-Louis David. He became particularly known for his portraits, including Napoleon Bonaparte, Empress Josephine and Madame de Stael, but also created well-known images of mythology such as Psyche and Cupid (1798, now at the Louvre, Paris) and history paintings such as The Battle of Austerlitz (1810), commissioned by Napoleon. He exhibited regularly at the Salon. Napoleon created him 'baron of the Empire' in 1809, and he was made an officer of the Legion on Honour in 1812.
