Hyacinthe Rigaud

Born: 1659, France, Perpignan   Died: 1743, France, Paris

Baroque painter. Studied with painters Antoine Ranc and Charles le Brun. He won the prix de Rome in 1682 and was elected into the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, Paris, in 1710. Since he had initially trained in tailoring at his father's workshop, he was excelled at depicting clothes in his portraits. He became well known for his portraits of the Bourbon dynasty, namely Louis XIV, his son and grandson, and Louis XV, Louis XIV great-grandson. He also painted other members of the European nobility such as Frederick IV of Denmark and Augustus III of Poland.
