Martin Rota

Born: 1520, Croatia, Dalmatia, Sebenico   Died: 1583, Czech Republic, Prague

Engraver. Also known as Martino Rota. He worked in Rome, where he collaborated with Dutch engraver Cornelis Cort, Florence and Venice and was appointed portrait engraver at the imperial court in Vienna by 1573 for the reigning Habsburgs (Maximillian II and Rudolph II). From ca. 1580, he lived and worked in Prague. He created engravings and etchings of works by artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Michelangelo and Titian. In addition, he created illustrations for pamphlets, depictions of saints and maps.
