Charles Étienne Gaucher

Born: 1741   Died: 1804

Charles Étienne Gaucher was a French engraver who specialised in portraits but also illustrated scenes from literature and created reproduction prints of French paintings. He was first a pupil of Basan and afterwards of J. P. Le Bas. Gaucher was first noticed in his youth but was forced to abandon his studies due to his parents' poor background. He was a member of London and Rouen's academies, of the Philadelphians' circle, of the Philotechnical Society, and that of Sciences, Letters and Arts of Paris. Gaucher was also a writer, and he wrote all the articles on intaglio engravers in the Dictionary of Artists of Fontenay (dedicated to the memory of famous artists, Paris, 1790).
