Charles Le Brun

Born: 1619   Died: 1690

Charles Le Brun was a French painter, art theorist and a director of various art schools. He first studied in Simon Vouet's studio before becoming a pupil of François Perrier. In 1642 Le Brun started for Rome where he studied under Nicolas Poussin adapting the latter's theories of art and studied ancient Roman sculpture. After returning to France, he became one of the most significant driving forces behind the establishment of the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1648. Le Brun also founded the Academy of France at Rome in 1666. For Charles Le Brun, a painting meant a story one could decipher and nearly all of his works had been translated into engravings.
