Kathleen Hale

Born: 1898, UK, Scotland, Lanarkshire, Broughton   Died: 2000, Bristol

Writer, illustrator and designer. Studied at Reading University, 1915-17, where she was a pupil of Allen William Seaby (1867-1953). She worked briefly as a secretary to Augustus John (1878-1961), 1919, before undertaking various jobs including working as an 'extra' in films, debt-collecting and teaching art in a school. She visited Normandy in 1920 and Paris in 1923 where she met Cedric Morris (1889-1982). As an illustrator she specialised in childrens' books inventing the character 'Orlando the Marmalade Cat' which appeared in numerous publications between 1938 and 1972. She also produced woodcuts and designed costumes and scenery for the ballet 'Orlando's Silver Wedding' which was performed at the 1951 Festival of Britain
