Mario Rutelli

Born: 1859, Italy, Palermo   Died: 1941, Italy, Palermo

Sculptor. Studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Palermo. His most famous work is the 'Fontana della Naiadi' in Piazza della Repubblica, Rome; although the naked figures were controversial, Mussolini himself called the fountain the "exaltation of eternal youth, the capital's first salute to art." He taught from 1903-1923 at the school in which he studied, the Accademia di Belle Arti di Palermo, and by the 1920s was possibly the most established Italian sculptor of his time. He died in 1941 aged 82, and is buried in Cimitero di Sant'Orsola in Palermo.
