RKO Productions

   Active: 1928-1957

Radio-Keith-Orpheum Pictures. One of the so-called 'Big Five' of Hollywood's Golden Age, RKO was formed in 1928 as a merger between the Keith-Albee-Orpheum theatre chain, the Film Booking Offices of America studio, and RCA Photophone, a new division of the Radio Corporation of America. Born only a year before the stock market crash of 1929, RKO was plagued with economic instability; many other major studios were established earlier and did not suffer as badly. However, the company experienced great success with such classics as King Kong (1933), Top Hat (1935), Citizen Kane (1941), It's A Wonderful Life (1946) and Mighty Joe Young (1949). The original RKO Pictures ceased production in 1957
