Born: 1882, UK, England, Kent, Ramsgate   Died: 1942, South Africa

Painter, illustrator, cartoonist and printmaker. Studied at the Birbeck Institute, London, 1898-1900, at the Royal Academy Schools, and then under John Singer Sargent, 1902-07. He worked in England and South Africa, the latter 1916-22 - when he worked as a cartoonist for 'The Rand Daily Mail' - and then again from 1936. He also worked as an illustrator with publications including Israel Zangwill's 'Ghetto Comedies and Ghetto Tragedies', Leonard Flemming's 'A Fool on the Firm' and Angelo Rappaport's 'Myths and Legends of Ancient Israel'. As a painter he produced a variety of work including landscapes, murals and portraits with sitters including Einstein and Gandhi. His most famous work is a large mural in the Cullen Library of Wit's University in South Africa which records Vasco da Gama's departure from Portugal for Africa
