Brendan Stuart Burns

Born: 1963, UK, Wales, Cardiff

Painter. Studied Fine Art at Cardiff College of Art between 1981 -1985 before undertaking a postgraduate in painting at The Slade School of Art, University College London from 1985 to 1987. Burns has exhibited both nationally and internationally, taking his work to America, France, Belgium, Australia and Spain. He won the Gold Medal in Fine Art at The National Eisteddfod of Wales in 1993 and 1998, and Welsh Artist of the Year in 2000 and 2003. He was recently awarded a ‘Creative Wales Major Award’ by the Arts Council of Wales. An extract from his personal statement reads: "The fine line which separates figuration and abstraction underpins [his] work. A close relationship with the Pembrokeshire Coast has provoked a large and ongoing series of paintings. Paint in fact, is a major concern in itself. Process, is integral, both in painting terms as well as ‘within’ the landscape. The concept of space, both actual and pictorial; implications of time and place; issues within movement, weather and light; alongside gesture, glimpse and memory are requisite themes within these paintings. Painting is thinking; it is a presentation of what you do not know as well as what you do know. ‘Touch' within these paintings is crucial." He is represented by Osborne Samuel Gallery London.
