Charles Burton

Born: 1929, UK, Wales, Rhondda Fawr, Treherbert

Painter. Grew up in Rhondda Fawr between the First and Second World War. Won the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the National Eisteddfod in 1954 when he was 25. He attended Cardiff College of Art in the late 1940s where he became part of the Rhondda Group with his friends Ernie Zobole and Glyn Morgan. He moved on to postgraduate study at the Royal College of Art, following which he became a teacher. He was Head of Painting at Liverpool College of Art until 1970, then Head of Art and Design at the Polytechnic of Wales until his retirement. He is known for his calm and introspective style of painting, favouring landscape and still life. When Burton was still in his 20s, his work was already gaining interest and being sought for purchase by public and private institutions. It has since been held and exhibited widely. He notably has work in the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, Newport Museum and Art Gallery, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea, BBC Wales, Cardiff and the House of Lords.
