Dinah Prentice

Born: 1935, UK, England

Textile artist and painter. Wife of the late painter David Prentice (1936-2014). Educated at Haberdashers’ Aske’s, London, and the Wyggeston Girls School, Leicester, she studied painting at Birmingham College of Art and Crafts and the Royal Academy. She, along with her husband, was one of the original co-founders of the influential Ikon Gallery in Birmingham in 1964, and she also organised exhibitions at MAC. She has work in private and public collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead. She was originally a painter, however in the early 1970s, before the widespread revival of interest in quilt making, she began constructing paintings using pieced fabric techniques, and became well known for her unique blend of textiles and painting. One of her works, titled Laced Threads, is permanently installed in the Rotunda Gallery in the University of Birmingham’s Aston Webb Building.
