James Donovan

Born: 1974, UK, Wales, Aberdare

Painter. Studied at Mid-Glamorgan Centre for Art & Design from 1992 to 1994 before moving on to Swansea Institute of Higher Education until 1997. He then spent a year as Artist in Residence at Swansea College of Further Education. His art career began while he was still a student at Swansea Institute. In 2001 he undertook a teaching position as Art Teacher/Head of Art at Bishop Hedley High School, Merthyr Tydfil, where he remains today. He has been exhibited widely across Wales and the UK in both group and solo exhibitions, notably Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea, Newport Museum and Art Gallery, Newport, Highgate Fine Art, London and Fosse Gallery, Cotswolds. Donovan’s aim, through his work, is to represent the influence that father figures and family history have had on his upbringing and beliefs, the outcome of which are images that are comedic and poignant tributes to valleys culture and the influence that our past has on our present and future. He was awarded the Sir Leslie Joseph Young Artist of the Year in 1998, and his work is housed in many collections across Wales.
