Born: 1940, UK, England, London, Brixton

Painter. Trevena received no formal art training but decided to become a full time artist and leave her local government job in the 1990s. She paints in watercolour and enjoys vibrant compositions inspired by the cinema. Still lifes are her main theme, but she also paints abstract landscapes and creates monoprints and pen and ink works. In 1994, she became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and was elected member of the RI Council 1995-99 and 2001-04. She was also President of the Sussex Watercolour Society 2015-16. Trevena won a variety of prizes including twice the Winsor & Newton Award. Her work is shown internationally in e.g. the UK, France and China. She runs workshops in the UK and other European countries, and has published a series of books which include ‘Taking Risks with Watercolour’ (2004), ‘Vibrant Watercolours’ (2006), ‘Breaking the Rules of Watercolour’ (2012) and ‘Shirley Trevena’s Watercolours’ (2015).
