David Hurn

Born: 1934, UK, England, Surrey, Redhill

Photographer. Born in Surrey to Welsh parents. Self-taught photographer who began his career as a photographer for the Reflex Agency before turning freelance. He gained early reputation with his coverage of the 1956 Hungarian revolution. He eventually moved away from current affairs to take on a more personal approach. His documentary style led him to photograph many famous faces, including The Beatles, Jane Fonda and Sophia Loren, and he even shot Sean Connery in the poster image for ‘James Bond: From Russia with Love’. He became an associate member of Magnum in 1965 and a full member in 1967. Hurn set up the famous School of Documentary Photography in Newport in 1973. His credentials garnered him international recognition as one of Britain’s most influential reportage photographers. He technically resigned in 1989 but collaborated with Professor Bill Jay on textbook ‘Being a Photographer’ in 1997, and in 2000 ‘Wales: Land of My Father’ was published by Thames and Hudson. The book was a self-initiated project attempting to discover the meaning of the phrase 'my culture'. It consists of observations on the remarkable changes taking place in Wales from 1970 until the books publication. He continues to live and work from his home in Tintern, Wales.
