Mary Constance Vivian Rodd

Born: 1901   Died: 1981

Known as Lady Mary Rennell, she was born in 1901. English artist working mainly in pencil, chalk, and oil paint. Daughter of the first Lord Bicester. Educated mostly at home by private tutors, but at 17 she joined the Slade School of Fine Art as a part-time student while also working as a ward maid for the war wounded before the end of the war on 11th November 1918. After leaving art school she shared a studio with Diana Walton in Kennington, London. She married Francis Rodd, the explorer, diplomat and author, in 1928 and they went on to have four daughters. In 1940 she took her daughters to America to avoid the impact of the Second World War on London. Before returning to Britain, she held a solo exhibition of drawings in New York. In 1952 Rennell converted to Catholicism. From 1952 onwards she travelled extensively with her husband, including to Australia. In Australia she held solo exhibitions in Perth and Melbourne in 1968. She exhibited frequently in London, at the Royal Society of British Artists, The Royal Society of Portrait Painters as well as at the Royal Academy. She died in 1981.
