Maxwell Ashby Armfield

Born: 1882, UK, England, Hampshire?, Ringwood   Died: 1972

Painter, illustrator and writer. Husband of the writer Constance Smedley (1881-1941). Son of a quaker and mill engineer. He studied at Birmingham School of Art, from 1899, where he was taught by Henry Payne (1868-1940). He then travelled to Italy in 1901, and, in 1902, to Paris where he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He worked in America, mainly California, between 1915 and 1922, before returning to England where in 1924 he helped to found the New Forest Group of Painters. He wrote poetry, travel journals, and numerous books on art including 'The Syntax of Art, Rhythmic Shape', Greenleaf Press, 1920, 'An Artist in America', Methuen, 1925, and 'Tempera Painting Today', 1946. Influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites, he painted landscapes, figures and street scenes in tempera and watercolour
