Henry Woods

Born: 1846, UK, England, Warrington   Died: 1921, Italy, Venice

Painter and illustrator. The artist studied at the Warrington School of Art, which awarded him a travel stipend in 1865. This enabled him to attend the Kensington Art School in London. In 1869, he and his friend, fellow illustrator Samuel Luke Fildes (1843-1927), started working for the weekly newspaper The Graphic. The same year, Woods started exhibiting at the Royal Academy and contributed works to their annual show almost every year between 1873 and 1915. On a visit to Venice in 1876, the city influenced his work so much that he moved there permanently in 1878 and established a studio. He specialised in genre and landscape and depicted the daily lives of ordinary Venetians. He became an associate of the Royal Academy in 1882 and a full member in 1893. When in London, he spent a lot of time at The Arts Club where he was a member from 1873 until 1920. The Academy of Fine Arts in Venice made him its only foreign member, and he won the bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889.
