Theodore Blake Wirgman

Born: 1848, Belgium, Louvain   Died: 1925, UK, England, London

Painter and illustrator. Wirgman’s family descended from Swedish silversmiths who immigrated to London in the early 18th century. The artist grew up in London and studied at the Royal Academy Schools from the age of fifteen. He lived in Paris for a while before returning to London. In London, he created a number of portraits for the Graphic and illustrations of British sculptors for the Century magazine. In addition to portraits, he painted historical and contemporary genre subjects. Wirgman was part of a group of young artists, including Walter Crane (1845-1915), Robert Bateman (1842-1922), Henry Ellis Woolridge (1845-1917), Edward Clifford (1844-1907) and Alfred Sacherevel, who admired and were influenced by the works of Simeon Solomon (1840-1905) and Edward Burne-Jones (1833-98). He joined the Arts Club, London, in 1892.
